At the 1986 annual meeting in Norfolk, Virginia, one of the main topics of the Past Presidents Group session was the dearth of nominations for the Association's prestigious Walter S. Mangold Award. It was believed that other awards were receiving the nomina tions because of the type of trophy given or because a sum of money was a part of the award (Snyder and Wagner awards). In order to encourage nominations for the Mangold Award, the past presidents decided that a $500 monetary award should be a part of the Award, and the members of the group contributed to a fund to make this possible for four years. They encouraged the NEHA Board to include this sum as a line item in future budgets. Currently this is done. NEHA Presidents Walsh (1985-86) and Morris (1986-87) appointed past presidents A. Harry Bliss (deceased), William Broadway, Trenton Davis, Boyd Marsh, John Todd and William Walter as an Archives Committee and charged them with preparing a historical display and a 50 Year History of NAS/NEHA for the Golden Anniversary in San Diego in 1987. At the 1986 annual meeting of the Past Presidents in Hartford, Connecticut, the group decided to invite the NEHA incoming second vice president to attend their meeting in San Diego in order to express a willingness to help with any assignments requested.
Honors for Presidents
To recognize the contribution of leadership by presidents of NAS, in 1963, a bylaws change gave Life Membership without fee to all past presidents of NAS, and this prac tice continues today. In 1969, a bylaws change awarded all past presidents of the associa tion ex-officio (nonvoting) membership in the Association's Board of Directors, so the association could benefit from their experience and wisdom. For more than 30 years, a gavel has been presented to the incoming president by the (Cup and Container Institute) Single Service Institute. Presentations at the annual banquet were made by editors of the Health Officers News Digest, Howard Hough and William Hickey. Current Environment News Digest Editor, Charles Felix, has done the honors for the past 17 years. The gavel is appropriately inscribed with the NEHA President's name and the year. Long time supporter of NAS/NEHA, Mark Nottingham has recognized each past president since 1949 with a commemorative plaque showing the name of the president, year of service, and a mounted gavel as a symbol of service. Early plaques featured the lighthouse "beacon" logo of the association. These honors and mementos are accepted proudly by the past presidents who have served the association so well and who, through the Past Presidents' Group, continue to foster the association and professionalism in environmental health.
