2024 Summer Session Open for NEPHIP Applications are now open for our National Environmental Public Health Internship Program (NEPHIP) Summer Session. NEPHIP is a 400-hr paid internship opportunity that links envi- ronmental health undergraduate and graduate students with funded internship placements at qualified state, tribal, local, and territorial environmental public health agencies. Our internship program focuses on building the environmental health workforce by exposing students to firsthand environmental public health work and career opportunities. This workforce initiative supports the establishment of quali- fied applicant pipelines to help meet current and future environ- mental health professional workforce needs across the nation and encourages environmental health students to consider careers in governmental environmental public health following graduation. NEPHIP is supported by the National Center for Environmental Health within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through a cooperative agreement (CDC-RFA-OT18-1802). Just like our Spring Session, the Summer Session focuses on building the workforce by exposing students to the work of state, tribal, local, and territorial environmental public health agencies, and opening the door to career possibilities. Student benefits include: • Real-world experience: Students work on actual environmen- tal public health projects, applying what they have learned in school and enhancing it with knowledge from experienc- ed professionals. • Concentrated: The internship is 400 hr, which allows students to work on a project from beginning to end. • Paid: Undergraduate students receive a base stipend of$6,000 and graduate students receive a base stipend of $8,000. • Matched: Interns and health departments are hand-matched to ensure the experience will be useful and meaningful for everyone. Host health department benefits include: • Environmental health focus: Interns are specifically studying environmental health at universities and colleges with programs that are accredited by the National Environmental Health Sci- ence and Protection Accreditation Council. • Duration: Interns are paid by NEPHIP to provide 400 hr of their time to their host health departments. • Financial support: Interns are supported with a stipend so they can focus on their internship. Further, support packages are available to health departments to help o”set intern-related costs • Matched : Interns and health departments are hand-matched to ensure the experience will be useful and meaningful for everyone. • Give back: Health department sta” get to provide firsthand per- spectives, connections, and excitement to the next generation of environmental health professionals. Student and health department applications for the Summer Ses- sion are due by February 1 . Learn more at www.neha.org/nephip.

Save the Date and Submit an Abstract for the Retail Program Standards Symposium The Retail Program Standards Symposium was established to pro- vide support and education for retail food safety jurisdictions at state, local, tribal, and territorial levels, whether just beginning with the Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Stan- dards (Retail Program Standards) or maintaining conformance. The symposium will be held virtually on April 16–18. There is no cost to attend. Here are a few reasons to attend: • Map the road to success. Attend educational sessions to help succeed in achieving the Retail Program Standards. • Get the lowdown on program sustainability and succession planning. Learn how to achieve conformance and design sus- tainability into your program for a stronger future. • Build your professional network. Learn from regulators and col- leagues and discover how to build meaningful networks. • Identify resources to better tell your environmental public health story. Learn tips and tools to successfully complete a risk factor study using inspection data or the Food and Drug Administra- tion (FDA) data collection tool. • Gain standards intel. Hear colleagues explain how they e”ec- tively communicated the importance of participating in the Retail Program Standards to decision-makers. The Call for Abstracts for the symposium is open and will close on January 19 . We are organizing sessions into three dis- tinct tracks to accommodate di”erent experience levels within the Retail Program Standards: 1) new, 2) somewhat experienced, and 3) highly experienced. The virtual event will also provide dedicated learning lab ses- sions from our exhibitors to demonstrate tools and services to sup- port your conformance with the Retail Program Standards. This 3-day symposium is presented by the NEHA-FDA Retail Flexible Funding Model Grant Program in collaboration with the Con- ference for Food Protection and is funded by FDA under award U2FFD007358. JEH Goes Open Access We are excited to announce to our membership that we are chang- ing how you and others can access our Journal of Environmental Health ( JEH ). Starting in January 2024, the JEH will be o”ered as an open-access publication.
