Best Practices Field Sampling Equipment and Supplies ƒ Sampling devices (e.g., soil coring device, water autosampler, bottles, filters, air filter canister or collection tube, wipes) ƒ Preservatives and dechlorinating agents (If feasible, it is recommended that preservatives and dechlorinating agents be added to sample containers prior to sample collection) ƒ Sample volumetric measuring devices and/or weighing devices. ƒ Sample containers and packaging materials, including wet ice or ice packs (Ensure ice does not come into direct contact with samples) ƒ PPE ƒ Record-keeping devices (e.g., logbooks, chain of custody forms, writing instruments, camera) ƒ Site maps, GPS recorders, etc. ƒ Sample location markers ƒ Shipping containers, shipping forms, and shipping labels. ƒ Waste containers ƒ Materials for cleaning equipment and sample container exteriors ƒ Field testing equipment (e.g., dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity meters) Field Data Documentation All data collected in the field should be adequately documented. Documented information should include (for example): ƒ Date and time of sampling ƒ Sample identification number ƒ Sampling depth ƒ Sample type and collection methods used ƒ Sample collection medium ƒ Physical and meteorological conditions ƒ Expected contaminants ƒ Expected radionuclides (if applicable) ƒ Sample size (weight, volume), sample duration (air filters), air volume, preservation, etc. ƒ Sample handling precautions ƒ Field screening data (if applicable) ƒ Names of field sampling personnel ƒ Sampling Collection Plan (SCP) ƒ Sample location(s) (including GPS coordinates, if appropriate) When performing radiological dose rate measurements of samples in the field, it is important to document and transmit the results to the laboratory along with the samples. The documentation should include the background count rates, units of measurement, and information about the instrument used to obtain the dose rate, such as the type, serial number, and calibration date. Electronic data recording devices are also available for use to collect, store, and report sampling and analytical data.
