the relationship between fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), socioeconomic conditions, and crime rates across 10 highly polluted U.S. states from 2000–2022. After accounting for differences among states and changes over time, the study found a significant positive association between PM2.5 concentrations and crime rates. Although the findings do not establish causal- ity, they offer a broader perspective on the potential social costs of pollution and the inter- connected benefits of improving air quality.
