ADVANCEMENT OF THE PRACTICE

About the Author: Jack Guzewich retired from the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) within the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2011. He was a senior advisor for environmental health in the O€ce of Food Defense, Com- munication, and Emergency Response. He worked on several special projects, includ-

ing enhancing relations with federal, state, and local government partners; CFSAN’s produce safety initiative; the Council to Improve Foodborne Outbreak Response (CIFOR); and the implementation of envi- ronmental assessments at FDA. Before work- ing at CFSAN, Guzewich previously worked for the New York State Department of

Health, where he was the lead for foodborne disease outbreak surveillance and food ser- vice establishment regulation, as well as the training officer for environmental health staff in the state. He is a well-known and respected figure in food safety.
